In my experience as a mechanic, it’s not necessary to tip mechanics for an oil change. However, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tip a mechanic. It’s better to focus and quality than trying to be fast. But you'll likely receive tips if you can offer quality service and respect customers' time. Be transparent and honest. Transparency and honesty are crucial to building long-lasting business relationships. If any unexpected issues arise in changing the engine oil, communicate with the customer on time, and don’t hype spare parts prices. Ask for feedbacks When I was working with my brother on a small mechanic garage, one of the things that retained customers and made some of them tip me was asking for feedback. I do this on virtually any service we offer, and the end result is long-lasting customer relationships. However, I don’t recommend doing this on all oil changes unless you encounter an issue during the oil change. For example, if there were oil leaks from the sump or oil pan gasket leak you fixed during an oil change, it's best to call the customer and ask if the leak returns. While asking for feedback is pretty cool, I do not recommend it if you work in a company. It may be against the company policy. If the mechanic did an excellent job or respects your time and you want to appreciate it, tip the service technician. And how much you tip the service technician depends on you. For an oil change, I recommend $5 to $10. But you can make it up to $15 to $20 if the service technician did extra services. Some companies have a policy that tips go to the company rather than the service technicians. It's best you go with your money if the company takes the tip. Depending on the services rendered, you can tip between $5 and $20. If the mechanic goes above and beyond what is required, you can tip up to $20. But if the mechanic did regular work and you want to show appreciation, then $5 is okay.
